Want to improve your Dutch but not sure where to start?
Maybe you’ve studied Dutch before, but you’re not sure what your current level is or which Dutch textbook you should buy. The good news: you don’t have to figure it out alone.
At Flowently, you can start with a free online intake and Dutch level assessment. We look at what you already know, what you can understand and, most importantly, how well you can actually communicate in Dutch. Based on your level and goals, we can recommend the right course, tutor and study materials.
What Is My Dutch Level?
Dutch language levels are often described using the European CEFR levels: A0, A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1/C2.
But your level isn’t always the same across every skill. You might understand Dutch at B1 level but still feel like an A2 speaker. You may read quite easily but struggle to follow a fast conversation. That’s completely normal. Knowing Dutch and speaking Dutch are not the same thing.
A0 — Absolute Beginner
You are starting from scratch, perhaps knowing only a few words such as goedemorgen or dankjewel. You can start at the beginning of a beginner course without taking a test.
A1 — Beginner
You can introduce yourself, ask and answer simple questions, understand basic sentences and recognise familiar words on signs, menus and in everyday situations.
A2 — Elementary
You can manage simple conversations about familiar topics and understand the basics of Dutch grammar, including past and present tenses. You are becoming more independent in everyday Dutch.
B1 — Intermediate
You can have conversations about familiar topics, explain your opinions and talk about your experiences. The focus now shifts from learning Dutch to actively using it.
B2 — Upper Intermediate
You can communicate comfortably in many professional and social situations, understand more complex texts and follow conversations at a natural pace.
