Ideal for Absolute Beginners – Meet our Tutor Jeroen

If you’re starting from zero, private sessions are often the best way to begin. Your Flowently tutor adapts the pace entirely to you, making sure you feel comfortable and confident. Our tutor Jeroen especially enjoys working with absolute beginners, guiding them step by step through their first conversations.

Hi Jeroen, what can you tell us about yourself and your professional background?

I am a historian with a master’s degree at the University of Amsterdam. I love to write about the relationship between humans and nature, and study how this was depicted in art, or what green spaces looked like in cities throughout history. During my studies, I worked part-time as tutor, and I’m very happy that I’m able to continue doing that at Flowently. In my free time I hike, do sports, and care for my abundant collection of house plants.

And can you tell us a bit how you would integrate – for those who are interested – Amsterdam history into your language sessions?

History shapes language, and exploring the past is a great way to enrich your learning experience. What’s great about Amsterdam is how diverse its history is, so there’s guaranteed to be something that resonates with you.  For architecture lovers, there’s Museum Het Schip: a museum about the Amsterdamse School – an influential building style from the 1920s. If you’re into engineering, there’s Museum ‘t Kromhout at the old dockyards. It’s a hidden gem, run by volunteers who are passionate about the shipbuilding industry.

For art history there’s so much more than just the Van Goghmuseum, for example there are the weekly old books and arts fairs in the center. And did you know that the Vondelpark was named after the most important writer in Dutch history? The list goes on and on, and all of these places are perfect for live sessions. They will deepen your understanding of the Dutch culture and liven up your language learning journey at the same time!
