If you’re raising a family in Amsterdam, cycling with your children is part of everyday life. Whether you’re a mama or papa, choosing the right family bike makes school runs, supermarket trips and weekend adventures much easier. Local mum Lana shares what to look for, from the traditional moederfiets to modern electric cargo bikes.
What Is a Mother’s Bike?
A Dutch moederfiets, or mother’s bike, is designed to make cycling with children easier. It typically has extra space between the saddle and handlebars, a sturdy frame and a double kickstand for stability when loading children or groceries.
Popular Dutch brands and models to explore include Gazelle Bloom, Cortina E-Common Family and Batavus Mambo. Try different bikes to find one that suits your riding style and family needs.
Electric Cargo Bikes: Room for Everyone
An electric cargo bike (elektrische bakfiets) has a box at the front where children can sit within your view. The electric motor helps when carrying children, bags and groceries, especially on longer journeys.
Popular options include Urban Arrow, Gazelle Makki, Lovens, Dolly and Bakfiets.nl. They vary in price, size and features, so check passenger capacity, safety equipment and servicing options before buying.
Longtail Bikes: A Compact Alternative
A longtail bike has an extended rear frame with space for child seats or a passenger bench. It can carry children and shopping while feeling more like a regular bicycle than a large cargo bike.
Models worth exploring include the Gazelle Cabby, plus the Tern GSD, Riese & Müller Multicharger and Benno Boost. These include international brands available in the Dutch market.
A longtail may suit families with one or two children and limited storage space. A cargo bike can be a better fit if you need room for several young children or lots of bags.
Front or Rear Child Seat?
The right setup depends on your child’s age, development and size. Always choose a suitable, approved seat, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and check that your bike can safely carry the combined load. Don’t assume that cycling with a baby in a sling is safe.
Find Your Perfect Family Bike
Before buying, consider your budget, storage space, daily route and how many children you need to transport. Visit a local bike shop, test-ride different styles and ask about compatible seats, accessories and maintenance. With the right bike, cycling around Amsterdam can become one of the best parts of family life.
