Maria Westerbos & The Plastic Soup Foundation - Flowently

Maria Westerbos & The Plastic Soup Foundation

Plastic, we simply can’t live without it. But there are places we’d definitely rather not find it…….As concern over microplastics grows, so do smart solutions. From mindful packaging to plastic-free chewing gum, small everyday choices are helping us reduce exposure and rethink our relationship with plastic.

The Plastic Soup Narrative

When Maria Westerbos first heard about the vast “plastic soup” swirling through our oceans, she didn’t just see an environmental issue, she saw a systemic failure. At the time, she had already built a successful 25-year career in media and television. Storytelling was her craft. But in 2008, confronted with the growing crisis of plastic pollution, she decided that telling stories was no longer enough. It was time to change the narrative entirely.

From Media Professional to Environmental Changemaker

Westerbos understood something crucial: complex environmental challenges need clear communication. Drawing on decades of experience in mass communication, she transformed concern into action. In 2011, from her kitchen table in the Netherlands, she founded the Plastic Soup Foundation (PSF).

Her mission was bold yet strategic: stop plastic pollution at the source. While many organizations focused on cleaning beaches and oceans, Westerbos targeted the root cause: production and design. Prevention, not cleanup, became the foundation’s guiding principle.

Beat the Microbead

Among PSF’s most influential projects is Beat the Microbead, an international campaign exposing the hidden microplastics in cosmetics and personal care products. At the time, few consumers realized that everyday items like scrubs and toothpaste contained tiny plastic particles that washed straight into waterways.

The campaign combined science, consumer awareness, and corporate pressure, a powerful mix. The result? Major brands reformulated products, and governments introduced bans on microplastics in cosmetics. Beat the Microbead became a landmark example of how advocacy, backed by research and public engagement, can drive regulatory change worldwide.

The Next Frontier

Westerbos didn’t stop there. Through the Plastic Health Coalition, the foundation investigates the link between plastic pollution and human health. By collaborating with scientists and medical experts, the initiative explores how microplastics and plastic-associated chemicals may impact the human body.

Her reasoning is clear: when environmental damage becomes a public health issue, policymakers and industries move faster. Framing plastic pollution as a human health risk shifts the debate from distant oceans to personal wellbeing.

A Leader in Sustainability

Today, Maria Westerbos is widely recognized as a leading voice in sustainability and environmental advocacy. Under her leadership, the Plastic Soup Foundation has grown into an internationally respected organization influencing policy, industry standards, and consumer behavior.

Her journey proves that one determined individual — armed with communication skills, scientific collaboration, and strategic focus — can spark global change. In the fight against plastic pollution, Maria Westerbos didn’t just raise awareness. She built a movement that continues to reshape how the world thinks about plastic.
