One of the great things about living in the Netherlands is how easy it can be to get by in English. Many Dutch people speak English well, which makes settling into everyday life much easier.
But there is a catch. Speaking English can sometimes make it harder to become part of Dutch social life.
You may notice Dutch colleagues switching to Dutch when conversations become more informal, personal or spontaneous. It’s usually not intentional exclusion — it’s simply the language that feels most natural to them. ‘Met de deur in huis vallen’ literally means ‘to fall into the house with the door’ and figuratively means to get straight to the point without any introduction or small talk. The Dutch way.
Dutch communication is often described as direct. Compared with cultures where messages may be softened or expressed more indirectly, Dutch people are generally comfortable saying what they think.
In the workplace, this can mean getting to the point quickly, giving straightforward feedback or openly discussing different opinions. For an expat, it can take some time to understand that direct communication is not necessarily meant to be unfriendly. Especially if you are not familiar with the Hidden Dutch Politeness.
Dutch society also tends to have relatively informal and egalitarian workplace relationships. Hierarchy exists, but it may be less visible in everyday interactions than you are used to.

Dutch life comes with its own rhythms. Being on time is generally important, particularly for appointments and meetings, and planning ahead is common.
And then there’s the bicycle. Cycling is simply part of everyday life for many people in the Netherlands — for commuting, shopping and getting around town. The extensive cycling infrastructure makes this particularly easy.
Of course, not every Dutch person behaves in exactly the same way. Culture is a guide, not a rulebook.
