Finding Your Way in OV
Are you an enthusiastic cyclist, or do you sometimes travel by public transport – OV, Openbaar Vervoer – in the Netherlands as well? Many Dutch public transport announcements are formal and spoken quickly. By recognizing these standard phrases, you will understand more quickly what is happening during your journey.
Let’s help you out!
When you hear this on a tram or bus
1. Vergeet niet uit te checken met uw OV-chipkaart.

It means: Don’t forget to check out with your OV-chipkaart.
2. U kunt hier overstappen op streekvervoer.
→ Yuu kunt heer OH-ver-stap-pen op STRAYK-fer-vohr.
It means: You can transfer here to regional public transport.
3. Deze tram rijdt om via de Van Baerlestraat.
→ DAY-zuh tram reit om VEE-uh duh Vahn BYR-luh-straht.
It means: This tram is diverted via Van Baerlestraat.
Simple questions on a tram or bus
Sometimes you just want to ask a simple question on the bus or tram in Dutch. From “Where is the next stop?” to “Do I need to transfer here?”, learning a few basic public transport questions can make daily life easier, less stressful, and a lot more fun.
Here are some of the most useful questions.
1. Good day, where can I buy a ticket?
You say: Goedendag, waar kan ik een kaartje kopen?
→ GHUH-duh-n-dahgh, vahr kahn ik uh KAHR-chuh KOH-puh?
2.How many stops until Amsterdam Central?
You say: Hoeveel haltes nog tot Amsterdam Centraal?
→ Hoo-VAYL HALL-tuhs nog tot AHM-stər-dam sen-TRAAL?
3. Do I need to transfer here?
You say: Moet ik hier overstappen?
→ Moot ik heer OH-ver-stap-pen?
4. Can I get out? Can the door be opened?
You say: Mag ik eruit? Mag de deur open?
→ Makh ik er-OOYT? Makh duh deur OH-pen?
5. What is the next stop?
You say: Wat is de volgende halte?
→ Vat is de vol-guh-duh hal-tuh?
And of course — as a courteous passenger — it’s polite to greet the driver when you leave the tram or bus. For example, you could say:
Thank you, and have a nice day!
You say: Bedankt en een fijne dag!
→ Buh-dankt en uhn fain-uh dag!
Your driver will respond with:
Goede reis en tot ziens!
Ghoo-duh rais en tot zeens!”
Have a good trip, and see you later!
