André Hazes: Master of ‘Smartlappen’

What is a ‘Smartlap’? Understanding Dutch culture……..

Recognise this? You’re in a typical Dutch bar, everyone’s had a few drinks, the atmosphere is warm and cheerful… and suddenly a very specific type of music starts playing. People begin to sing along, arms waving in the air, voices full of emotion. Yes indeed — a smartlap, the Dutch classic tear-jerker that turns any night out into an unforgettable cultural moment.

Early Life in Amsterdam

André Hazes was born in 1951 in Amsterdam, growing up in a working-class neighborhood. Music was his passion from an early age. At just eight years old, he was discovered singing at the famous Albert Cuyp Market. This marked the beginning of his journey to becoming one of the Netherlands’ most beloved folk singers.

A Unique Sound and Style

Hazes combined Dutch folk music (levenslied) with elements of rock and pop, creating a signature sound. His deep, emotional voice and heartfelt lyrics resonated with ordinary people, singing about love, heartbreak, and life’s struggles. His music was raw, honest, and deeply connected to Dutch culture.

Rise to Fame

After years of small performances, his big breakthrough came in 1976 with ‘Eenzame Kerst’. However, it was ‘Een Beetje Verliefd’ (1981) that made him a household name. Over his career, he released dozens of albums, filled with hits like ‘Bloed, Zweet en Tranen’ and ‘Zij Gelooft in Mij’.

A Troubled but Beloved Star

Despite his fame, Hazes struggled with personal challenges, including health issues and alcohol addiction. Yet, his authenticity and down-to-earth nature made him even more loved by his fans. He remained a symbol of the Dutch working class and an icon of ‘het levenslied’.

André Hazes passed away in 2004, but his music lives on. His songs are still played at parties, football matches, and emotional moments. If you hear Dutch people singing together in a cafe with their arms in the air, there’s a good chance it’s a song by Andre Hazes. His life was even turned into a musical and a film, proving his enduring impact on Dutch culture.

Andre Hazes quote

‘Ik ben geen chronische drinker. Ik ben een chronische gezelligheidsdrinker. Helaas is het bij mij elke dag gezellig.’
‘I’m not a chronic drinker. I’m a chronic social drinker. Unfortunately, I have a good time every day.
