Vincent van Gogh – Zijn leven by Marian Hoefnagel offers an accessible introduction to his life and work, written in simple Dutch. Published as part of the Leeslicht series, the book is specifically designed to make reading more accessible to adults who find standard Dutch books challenging. The book is 80 pages long.
More Than Just an Artist
Van Gogh’s story is much more than a story about paintings. He did not become an artist until his late twenties and worked as an artist for only about ten years. During his lifetime, he struggled financially and experienced periods of mental illness. His younger brother Theo supported him both emotionally and financially and played an important role in his life and career.
The Leeslicht book explores these different sides of Van Gogh, alongside his development as an artist.

Van Gogh is deeply connected to the Netherlands, but his story is also international. The book was created in collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum and was launched in November 2024. It is the first book about Van Gogh’s life written in simple Dutch.
