For many expats learning Dutch and exploring Dutch culture, Urgenda is one of the most influential organizations to know. It combines a typically Dutch approach—innovation, collaboration, and practical solutions—with a strong focus on sustainability and climate action.
What Is Urgenda?
Urgenda is a Dutch non-profit foundation focused on accelerating the transition to a sustainable society. The name combines the Dutch words urgente (urgent) and agenda, reflecting its mission to create practical solutions for climate and environmental challenges. The organization works with governments, businesses, farmers, citizens, and social organizations to make the Netherlands more sustainable.
Founders and Origins
Urgenda was founded in 2007 by Jan Rotmans and Marjan Minnesma. The initiative emerged from discussions at DRIFTand Erasmus University Rotterdam, where the founders developed ideas for an “urgent agenda” on sustainability and climate change.
Marjan Minnesma became the public face of the organization and played a major role in shaping its national and international impact. She remained a driving force behind Urgenda until her passing in 2026.
From Ideas to Action
Unlike many environmental organizations, Urgenda focuses on concrete projects. Over the years, it has promoted renewable energy, energy-efficient housing, sustainable agriculture, biodiversity initiatives, and citizen-led climate solutions. The organization is known for combining long-term vision with practical action.
The Historic Urgenda Climate Case
Urgenda became globally famous through its climate lawsuit against the Dutch government. In 2013, the organization and nearly 900 co-plaintiffs argued that the government had a duty to better protect citizens from the risks of climate change.
In 2015, the court ruled in Urgenda’s favor, ordering the government to reduce greenhouse gas emissions more aggressively. After several appeals, the Dutch Supreme Court upheld the decision in 2019. The ruling became the first successful climate case in which citizens established that a government has a legal duty to take stronger climate action.
Why Urgenda Matters Today
Urgenda is more than a climate organization; it is a symbol of Dutch innovation and civic engagement. Its work has inspired climate lawsuits and sustainability initiatives around the world while continuing to influence Dutch debates on energy, agriculture, and environmental policy. For expats interested in Dutch culture, Urgenda offers a unique window into how the Netherlands approaches sustainability: practical, collaborative, and ambitious.
